BMW offers some new and exciting news. The next generation of the BMW M5 will include a wagon version called Touring. Is this BMW wagon coming to America?
For years, wagons have been sacrilegious in the United States, and the proliferation of SUVs into the market hasn’t helped. Still, there’s always a market for something exciting and fun, even if it is a wagon.
In this case, BMW calls it a Touring model, which is probably more appropriate than shooting brake, which is used by some automakers to describe their wagon variants. Of course, our acceptance of the M5 Touring doesn’t mean it’s planned for the North American marketplace.
When you want muscle, the M5 has it
The views offered of the new M5 Touring have it fully covered in camouflage, but that doesn’t mean we can’t tell this is a wagon. The M5 Touring brings a muscular look to be more aggressive and profound than the next-generation 5 Series. The rear offers a roomy cargo area and a roof-mounted spoiler, and a set of quad exhaust ports, making it easy to admire the style and aggressive nature of what could have been nothing more than a mild-mannered family machine.
A hint at expected BMW power
The first hint you find that this BMW wagon has lots of power is the size of the visible brake rotors. These rotors are large, hinting that some impressive power could be on tap for this incredible BMW. The M5 Touring model should have some electrification, but BMW has yet to tell us what the power plant will be.
Some think the setup for this new wagon could be a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine and a plug-in hybrid electric motor, but we don’t have confirmation of this yet.
If this is the powertrain offered for this BMW wagon, it should deliver nearly 718 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. This is an impressive increase compared to the current M5, which returns 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque.
The new M5 Touring might not arrive until late 2024
Before we get the wagon version of this new M5, the regular model has to appear. The Touring trim might not show up until the end of next year. Currently, we have two luxury high-performance wagons from German brands in the United States.
Although it’s too early to know if the M5 Touring will compete with these two models, it’s fun to think about this new BMW taking on the likes of the Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon. We might not get to enjoy this new BMW, but it will certainly be a staple in Europe as it’s being tested on many tracks, including Nürburgring.
Why would BMW bring the M5 Touring to the United States?
The first-generation M5 Touring was a huge success in North America, which could give the brand all the information they need to bring this new model to our shores as well. The first model was only offered with a 5.0-liter V10 engine, but that gave it enough power and performance to make it fun and active on the road. This could be the right time for another version of this incredible car to make its appearance.
Testing of this new wagon has only just begun
We’ve seen prototypes of the M5 sedan several times already, but the first M5 wagons are only starting to be put through the testing required to bring them to the masses. These cars will first drive on urban streets, country roads, and autobahns near Munich. Once tested on these public roads, prototype wagon models will take on the Nürburgring to see if they can pass this test. Could we see a new lap record at this famous track for a wagon/shooting brake vehicle? It’s certainly possible.
We might not see this new BMW
As mentioned, BMW has not confirmed whether or not it will bring the new M5 Touring to the United States or Canada. The two previous generations never made it to America, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to find out that this new model isn’t coming here either. BMW has a strong and popular range of performance-based SUVs in the United States, and a high-powered wagon might confuse things a little bit.
If the regular BMW 5 Series wagon doesn’t make it to North America, it’s not likely we’ll see the high-powered M5 model either. This could be a serious letdown for those drivers that love to get behind the wheel of high-powered wagons and don’t want to be limited to SUVs.
