It takes 1.1 million dollars to get the very first Chevrolet E-Ray and the coveted 001 VIN plate. And it’s not surprising that the first E-Ray went to collector and dealer Rick Hendrick.
It’s not the first time he’s paid over seven figures for a first production Corvette, he’s done it several times. What’s even better is that the proceeds from the sale will go to charity. Chevrolet partners with DonorsChoose, a nonprofit organization that helps schools.
Once production starts on the E-Ray buyers will be able to configure their Corvette just the way they want before it makes its way to Chevy dealers.
What Powers the Chevy E-Ray?
Just like the latest gas-powered Corvette, the E-Ray will have a mid-engine design. A 6.2-liter Small Block V-8 will sit right in the center, delivering 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. There’s also an electric motor that sends power to the front wheels that generates 160 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. Between the seats, you’ll find a battery pack that not only feeds the motor, but also keeps the Vette balanced and contributes to its dynamic handling. This combination of gas and electric power makes the Corvette E-Ray the first all-wheel drive model.
The E-Ray is a hybrid setup, which means it doesn’t need to be plugged in. The driver will help keep the battery charged through a regenerative braking system and by coasting.
It Has a Cool Stealth Mode
If E-Ray drivers want to quiet the roar of the V-8 engine, whether it’s because they want to sneak into the driveway late at night without disturbing the house or sneak out for an early morning drive, they can activate Stealth Mode. This turns off the gas engine, so it runs completely on electric power. This mode will work at speeds up to 45 mph, and it’s nearly silent when activated.

How does zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds sound? With the combination of gas and electric power generating 655 horsepower, this Corvette will zip to 60 mph in the blink of an eye, and it can run the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds. But this car is not a one-trick pony. It’s designed for year-round driving and not just on the track. It will come with Magnetic Selective Ride Control and all-season tires, so it’s ready to conquer road conditions any time of year, whether it’s rain, snow, or even mud. Strong carbon ceramic brakes ensure stopping is just as precise as acceleration.
The Exterior Is Sleek and Functional
You won’t mistake the Corvette E-Ray for anything but a Corvette when you see it at Chevy dealers, but it has a slightly different look than the traditional gas-powered versions. It has wider fenders, fascias, and quarter panels, which are all carefully sculpted to maximize aerodynamics and performance. You can make your E-Ray stand out even more with optional features such as the Electric Blue stripe, carbon-fiber exterior trim inside and out, and unique seat options.
