GM is Becoming Energy Responsible

We call the usage of renewable energy becoming green and GM is working toward making their operations green.

It’s no secret that there’s a limited amount of fossil fuels that can be used and mined from the earth that we call home. Because of the limits to these fuels, it’s becoming more important than ever for companies to turn to renewable energy in order to power the equipment and machinery needed to build and create things.

Renewable energy comes in the form of electricity that can be generated through wind, solar, and water. In order to create and use this type of energy, large companies, such as GM, need to make strong commitments to lead the charge for the right energy that can be used for their operations.

The GM Commitment

The goal of GM is to reach a target of being 100 percent green by the year 2050. Currently, the company sources at least twenty percent of its global energy needs from renewable sources to power the operations in the US and Mexico. GM has been investing in solar energy for over a decade and now they are turning toward another form of power generation.

The Wind Power Answer

There’s a good chance you’ve seen wind farms marching over the landscape near you. These massive windmills are used to generate electric power using only the wind in order to move the propellers and create the energy needed. Recently GM took a large step forward toward its goal with a deal that was struck with DTE Energy to source 300,000 MWh of wind energy in Michigan alone. This is an incredible step in the right direction in order to power more of the GM operation on an annual basis and make it possible for this company to move toward being green.

How much energy is 300,000 MWh? The amount of energy that will be produced will be enough to completely power the GM Warren Technical Center and the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. This amount of energy is enough to power nearly 30,000 homes per year.

GM has also signed a deal to source 1.71 terawatt-hours of clean energy in North America to move even closer to the goal of becoming 100 percent green in the future. This new deal is a huge step for this large company and you can expect to see more deals like this one in the future.

Continuing the Growth of Renewable Energy

DTE plans to continue to bring more renewable energy with strong investments in solar energy to have more wind and solar energy offered by 2024. The goal is to grow the use of these renewable sources over the next several years and with the partnership of GM, this company has taken a huge step forward.

GM is not only working on more renewable sources for its operation, but they are also working toward more electric vehicles to add to its lineup and give us a green way to drive.
