Ramcharger and Ram 1500 REV Delayed Again

The Ramcharger PHEV and the electric Ram 1500 REV have been delayed yet again. This time, the Ramcharger is scheduled to arrive at dealerships in early 2026, while the 1500 REV has been pushed all the way to the summer of 2027.

Ram Explores Extended Quality Validation Program

Ram confirmed that the Ramcharger is headed for an extended quality validation program, but the company doesn’t know the exact timeframe. A few years ago, Ram discussed the future of electric trucks and revealed its plans for the electric 1500 REV and the PHEV Ramcharger. The latter uses a gas engine to generate power to extend the range of the battery.

Originally, both trucks were supposed to hit your local Ram dealer in 2024. However, Ram announced last fall that the 1500 REV wouldn’t come out until 2026. It also said the Ramcharger would arrive in the latter half of 2025, but now that model has also been delayed.

A memo was sent out to let suppliers know that the 1500 REV will go on sale in the summer of 2027, making it a 2028 model. The Ramcharger should hit your local Ram dealer in the first quarter of 2026.

Ramcharger Undergoes Additional Testing

An additional testing period is part of the delay for the Ramcharger. However, Ram also told Car and Driver that it was reassessing its product strategy in North America, in part due to the lack of demand for half-ton BEV pickups. The extra testing for the Ramcharger is geared at supporting the highest build quality.

Ram hasn’t given a specific timeline for the Ramcharger, but it seems reasonable to expect the testing period will likely start in the second half of 2025 and go to the end of the year. This would make an early 2026 launch date sensible. Ram didn’t say anything about the 1500 REV in its statement, implying that its priority is the Ramcharger right now.

What We Know About the Ramcharger PHEV

Since the Ramcharger is the closest model to having a confirmed release date, let’s explore what we know about the plug-in hybrid truck so far. The Ramcharger will feature an AWD platform that delivers 647 horsepower and 610 pound-feet of torque. The V6 engine acts as a generator to help recharge the battery.

The battery can also be recharged by plugging it into a DC fast-charger like a regular EV. Ram estimates the truck will get 145 miles of fully electric driving range. The Ramcharger is being sold as a solution for gas-engine lovers who don’t want to rely solely on electric power. The V6 engine’s charging ability eliminates range anxiety.

The powertrain of the Ramcharger is a complex blend of ICE and electric. The biggest difference is that the V6 engine doesn’t directly drive the axles. Instead, it works as a range extender for the battery pack. From there, the electric motors drive the AWD system.

The Ramcharger is expected to start around $60,000 and go up to $100,000. Three trims are likely to be offered, including the base Tradesman, mid-level Limited, and the top Tungsten trim. A Big Horn trim might also be offered.
