BYD Unveils Impressive New System
Long charging time is one of the top complaints about electric vehicles. BYD has eliminated that concern with an EV system that charges in just five minutes.
We’re used to filling up cars at the pump. It takes a few minutes, but there’s no need to find a way to occupy yourself for half an hour or more. The discrepancy in charging times vs. fuel fill-ups is one of the drivers’ top concerns about switching to EVs.
Now, BYD may have changed all that. BYD’s new battery and charging system can provide 292 miles of range in just five minutes. The automaker plans to start selling vehicles featuring the latest tech in China next month.
Why the New Platform Matters
BYD is a Chinese company that doesn’t sell its cars in the United States, but that doesn’t mean drivers in the US should just ignore the new technology.
The most apparent reason American drivers are excited about BYD’s breakthrough is that it speaks well of other automakers’ abilities to follow suit and generate battery systems that can accept a charge at much faster rates.
Eliminating this significant barrier to entry into the EV market could help to get more consumers on board with the new technology globally. Combined with greater renewable energy production rates, that could also offer wide-scale benefits to the planet.
Of course, it will take time for automakers across the rest of the world to catch up. You shouldn’t expect to see this technology at charging stations and dealerships that sell electric vehicles any time in the immediate future.
Another Serious Boost for BYD
BYD is already one of the world’s most popular manufacturers of electric vehicles. Currently, the company rivals Tesla as the world’s top seller. The new platform with ultra-fast charging times could give BYD the edge it needs to outperform Tesla globally and take the number one spot.
Tesla’s Superchargers are the best thing going on American roads right now. They can add up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes, significantly faster than most competitors.
Tesla still has the advantage of a much more extensive network. The automaker has over 65,000 Superchargers worldwide.
BYD is already off to a fantastic start for 2025. The company sold over 318,000 EVs and hybrid EVs last month, a 161% increase from last year’s numbers. BYD’s shares are up around 45% this year.
What to Expect From Ultra-Fast Charging
The first vehicles to switch to ultra-fast charging in China will be the Han L and Tang L. These two vehicles are relatively affordable, starting at around USD 37,338, and will be sold starting in April.
BYD hopes to build more than 4,000 charging stations by April to accommodate its newly redesigned Han L and Tang L models.
In other parts of the world, Mercedes-Benz is pulling in a close second in ultra-fast charging. Its new entry-level CLA EV sedan will add up to 201 miles in 10 minutes of DC charging.
