The Datsun 240Z We All Want to Drive

04.23.16 - Datsun 240Z

Recently a Datsun 240Z showed up that appeared ready to take on any other vehicle that could show up at any drag strip in the country. This car was fitted in every way possible, but still maintained the Orange Crush look and feel that makes it one of the most polarizing vehicles to every be made. We love this Datsun, it reminds us what the past was and how much power can really be put through this lightweight structure to make it an amazing performer on the track. Let’s see what this awesome blast from the past has to show us.

Just from the profile of this car you can see a few pipes where they might not have been on the original build. In addition to these pipes you see a wheelie bar that is screaming to be used for its intended purpose, keeping the car from flipping front over rear. You also see a set of racing tires that mean business and huge grill then the hood scoop that suggests a supercharger just might be under the hood of this mean beast. All this is enough to make you want to drive this car, but that is not where the fun ends with this Datsun 240Z.

Just to give you an idea of where this car is going, there has been over $80,000 invested in the car. For most of us an investment like this might spell divorce from our spouses, but we should at least see what this amounts to in this 240Z.

To start with the power for this beauty comes from a small block Chevrolet 355 engine that has 125-shot of nitrous injected into it. This is mated to a Turbo 350 transmission made by Steve Casner. The rear offers a nine-inch Ford, a 31 spline spool rear end with several bars including the wheelie bar. There is much more, but rather than go down the entire spec sheet, let’s talk about what this car can do.

This Datsun is capable of reaching sixty mph in 1.3 seconds. Not only can it make this run at a speed that would have the designers of today’s supercars green with envy, it can also reach the quarter-mile mark in only nine seconds. If that isn’t impressive enough, the car itself was once featured in Hot Rod Magazine to give us a car that is made to crush speed records in a car you might not expect.

Is this the kind of car you want to drive? It certainly should be, even if you only drive it once. Imagine stepping in behind the wheel of this beauty to find yourself ready to capture some form of glory on the track in one of the fastest straight races driven by a car that made its way to the junkyard and back. This is a car that is worth a story and worth a drive, are you up for taking a drive in this orange beauty?
