2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580
Mercedes-Benz has opted for a predictable branding strategy for its EVs. The EQE is reasonably equivalent to the automaker’s internal combustion E-Class, while the EQS is closer to the S-Class. However, both are fundamentally different from their predecessors.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

Internal-combustion G-Class models have one gas-powered engine. The G 580 has four electric motors. Together, they produce an impressive 579 hp and 859 lb-ft of torque.
The G 580 fits its four motors into its ladder frame. The front and rear axles each feature a pair of motors and gearboxes with shared housings. The G 580 Is Truly Off-Road Ready
Mercedes-Benz made the G 580 for off-roading. The luxury EV SUV utilizes the G-Turn mode, which drivers can enable on loose surfaces to spin the car on its axis, but that’s only part of what the automaker has done to make its electric G-Class off-road-ready.
The automaker also added a Crawl function to its new EV SUV. It allows the vehicle to maintain steady low speeds of up to 5 mph, which is helpful for traversing rough terrain.
G-Steering may not be as showy, but it’s just as crucial. By dragging the inside rear wheel, it helps the G 580 turn on a tighter axis.
Finally, every G 580 with EQ Technology will feature two separate gear ratios at each wheel so drivers can enable a Low Range ratio of 2:1 for off-roading at up to 53 mph speeds.
Impressive Range and Surprisingly Fast Charging Speeds
Range is a challenge for just about every EV SUV. However, this luxury automaker has employed some unique techniques for boosting it without negatively impacting power and performance.
Although the G 580 hasn’t been subjected to demanding EPA tests, its 116 kWh battery pack performed well on the European WLTP test cycle. According to the WLTP, it should deliver 294 miles of range.
Mercedes-Benz has managed to squeeze a competitive range out of its EV SUV in part by reducing weight. The battery pack’s protective skid plate is made from a proprietary carbon-based intelligent material mix rather than steel.
The G 580’s batteries also feature a faster max charging speed than most at 200 kW.
