Lexus Teases Us with a Glimpse of the New TX

We heard the rumors, but nothing was truly confirmed until Lexus revealed a teaser image of a new 2024 Lexus TX. This new three-row SUV is something different.

The current Lexus SUV lineup offers a pair of three-row body-on-frame SUVs, but this new model will be something much different. The Lexus RX L was to be a midsize three-row luxury SUV, and it worked for a short time. Still, most luxury SUV owners want consistent comfort across all three rows, and the RX L doesn’t provide that. The new TX is something different from the LX, GX, and RX L.

What do we know so far?

Toyota has mastered the art of teasing the public. Recently, they’ve been teasing us with the new Tacoma, which is scheduled to appear on the 19th of May. This new Lexus SUV could offer similar teasers, but we know a bit more about it than we did the Tacoma. Unlike the Tacoma, we know the TX will be built alongside the new Toyota Grand Highlander at the Toyota plant in Indiana. This means we should be able to make some assumptions and feel they are more like educated guesses than shots in the dark.

How much is shown in the teaser image?

All that we can see in the released image of the new Lexus TX is the rear half with the rear door and C-pillar visible. That might not seem like enough, but it does tell us that the TX is the same size as the new Grand Highlander, but it will have styling and elements that are uniquely Lexus. The rear window is different on the TX, and the rear lights come around the corner further, giving us more light into the quarter panel than what we find on the Toyota.

What’s under the hood?

Right now, nothing is confirmed by Lexus, but we can make some guesses as to what powertrains will be used in this new luxury SUV. These assumptions are based on what we know of the Grand Highlander. There will be three powertrains offered, starting with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 265 horsepower. A hybrid powertrain is also offered, which gives us a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and hybrid motors to deliver 245 horsepower and either FWD or AWD. Finally, the 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine from the Lexus RX that makes 362 horsepower and uses only AWD is also in play for this new Lexus SUV.

What makes the new Lexus TX unique?

The current Lexus SUV lineup includes the GX and LX, that are both traditional body-on-frame SUVs with three rows. The RX L is a midsize crossover with a cramped rear seat. Lexus intends to split the difference with this new SUV. The TX rides on the Toyota TNGA-K platform, making it a large crossover with plenty of driving dynamics and a unibody build. The new TX should offer a desirable level of features and roominess to make it a good option for luxury SUV shoppers that are looking at the BMW X7.

Will this Lexus SUV fit in the current market?

By adding hybrid powertrains to the mix, the new TX should be a useful SUV with a long lifespan. Although Toyota hasn’t released much information or many photos, we can guess that this new model could be as capable and versatile as the new Grand Highlander. The release of a teaser image allows us to think this new model might make its debut on a stage in the next few months, but that’s not a certainty.

As far as the fit in the market is concerned, the new Lexus TX might be enough to push the GX out the door for good. The GX, although an excellent luxury SUV, is a bit long in the tooth and isn’t one of the most popular builds offered. Adding the TX should also allow the RX to go back to being a two-row midsize SUV and not a cramped RX L three-row model. Both deleting the GX and reverting the RX would be good for the Lexus lineup.

Lexus is teasing us, and we love it. The new 2024 Lexus TX is confirmed, and the early image tells a story of the future of Lexus SUV driving. Are you waiting with anticipation for the next image or bit of information? You can bet we’ll have it for you when that news arrives.
