It sounds like a Christmas miracle is happening in Minneapolis, Minnesota – and for 12 women and their families, it most certainly is. Nonprofits, local car dealerships, and giving individuals have all come together this December to help some families in need via car donations.
Here’s how it happened and what some of the mothers had to say about the unexpected gift.
Newgate School’s Wheels for Women Program Helps Single Mothers in Need
The nonprofit Newgate School is well-known in Minnesota for taking car donations to teach underprivileged individuals a trade – specifically, how to be a mechanic. But you may not know that they also have programs like Wheels for Women designed to give those in need vehicles.
Wheels for Women normally gives a car to one single mother per month. But this month, in line with the giving nature of the holiday season – and knowing that there are many more people in need this year than some previous – they gave 12.
The cars even had gifts inside for the children of each woman’s family, just in time for Christmas.
The Lucky Women Who Received Vehicles This Year
Tyla Pream, the head of coordination for Wheels for Women, went through over 100 requests for car donations from families in need in the area. While only 12 families could be chosen, Pream said this was her favorite day to work each year.
“To have them come here and see what they’re getting, see the cars, see the gifts inside, there’s really no way to describe it except that it is absolutely incredible,” she told local news outlets.
The women who consented to be interviewed – Destiny Hill and Tatyana Krebsbach – expressed a similar sentiment when receiving their new vehicles.
Hill, having been without a car for over a year now, said her new Chevy Equinox would let her help her three young sons do after-school sports. When she saw the presents inside the Chevy, she laughed and said, “This is Christmas!”
Krebsbach said all she’d needed to make life better for her and her family was a car. “I’m going to get them (her children) into daycare. I’m going to get another job that probably pays better, and we’ll be able to succeed from here on out now,” she said.
These donations are changing the lives of single mothers, and that’s been the goal of Wheels for Women all along.
How You Can Help Newgate School Help Others
This year, the car donations for these women came from local dealerships, but this isn’t always the case. Newgate School and the Wheels for Women program depend on individual car donations to teach students debt-free and give vehicles to families in need.
