If you’re someone who spends a lot of time on the road, it’s hard to overstate how much money you could potentially save with a more fuel-efficient car. For example, 15,000 miles driving per year with a 20 MPG vehicle and gas at $3.50 will cost $2,625. If you have a vehicle that gets 35 MPG, then your costs go down to $1,500 per year, which is a drop of over $1,000. It’s easy to see how much you could save with one of the top gas-saving cars on the market.
Toyota Prius
The Toyota Prius is credited as the car that created the hybrid category, and it’s still going strong despite having a lot more competition these days. Fuel economy numbers for the Toyota Prius stand at 56 MPG combined, 53 MPG in the city, and 58 MPG on the highway. The maximum mileage for the Toyota Prius comes from the efficiency-centric Eco trim. The Toyota Prius is also the only model on this gas-saving list to offer AWD.
Hyundai Ioniq
The Hyundai Ioniq is the champion among hybrid models with gas-saving numbers like 59 MPG combined, 58 MPG in the city, and 59 MPG on the highway. The Blue Trim is where the savings come in as this model combines an electric motor that makes 43 horsepower and a four-cylinder gas engine that makes 104 horsepower.
Honda Insight
The Insight is essentially a Civic hybrid under a different nameplate. It looks a bit different from the standard Civic, but many basic features are the same. The base LX trim and higher EX trim will give you the best fuel economy from the Insight. Gas-saving numbers from the Insight stand at 52 combined MPG, 49 city MPG, and 55 highway MPG.
Toyota Corolla Hybrid
The Corolla Hybrid is a good alternative to the Toyota Prius if you want a Toyota, but aren’t sure about the Prius. The Corolla is one of Toyota’s most popular nameplates, so it was a great move on Toyota’s part to combine the proven hybrid system of the Toyota Prius with the sedan-only Corolla. The Corolla Hybrid gets slightly less MPG than the Toyota Prius, but the numbers are still good at 52 combined MPG, 53 city MPG, and 52 highway MPG.
Hyundai Elantra Hybrid
Similar to the above comparison, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is for those who want something more neutral in the looks department versus the unconventional Ioniq. This attractive sedan is packed with great tech features and a 139-horsepower powertrain. The Blue Trim is the most gas-saving of the Elantra Hybrid trims with numbers of 54 MPG combined, 53 MPG in the city, and 56 MPG on the highway.
Whether you go for the original hybrid in the Toyota Prius, or something newer like the Ioniq, you’ll be well on your way to saving a lot more money at the pump.
