A Look Back: 2014 Toyota Rav4 EV

A Look Back 2014 Toyota Rav4 EV

When it comes to the used Toyota RAV4, the 2014 EV model is a good pick. It offers impressive cargo capacity for an EV and a good driving range, quick acceleration, and stable handling. The 2014 Toyota RAV4 EV was unchanged and based on the previous RAV4 generation. Let’s take a closer look at this electric SUV.

All-Electric Crossover SUV

The 2014 used Toyota RAV4 EV is a bit of an odd duck as it was based on the previous generation of RAV4, but it held the distinction of having the best range of any other 2014 EV outside of Tesla. Despite holding a large battery pack, the RAV4 EV somehow manages to offer incredible cargo space. The 73 cubic feet of space matches the new generation of the gas-powered RAV4, and it also makes it one of the roomiest compact SUVs available.

Another impressive aspect of this EV is its quick acceleration from zero to 60 MPH in only 7.2 seconds. Its all-electric driving range is 103 miles, which might seem restricted compared to gas vehicles, but it’s actually better than most other EVs from this model year. Add in Toyota’s comfortable cabin, user-friendly tech, and a long list of standard features, and this becomes one of the most well-rounded EVs.

Performance and Fuel Economy in the 2014 Toyota RAV4

The used Toyota RAV4 EV from 2014 is powered by a 115-kW electric motor that makes roughly 154 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque while in Sport mode. Normal mode lowers the torque to 218 pound-feet. AWD is not available on this model, and it comes with a one-speed transmission. One full charge offers a driving range of 103 miles and it takes about six hours to get a full charge. Fuel economy isn’t exactly a thing with this EV, but there’s another metric that the EPA uses to get a rough equivalent for EVs. That metric is kilowatt-hours of energy per 100 miles. The RAV4 EV gets 44 kWh per 100 miles, which translates to about 76 MPG combined.

Driving Experience and Interior

Even though the 2014 used Toyota RAV4 EV is behind the gas-powered RAV4 in terms of generation status, it still offers an impressive driving experience. It handles securely and deftly, and the regenerative braking system isn’t at all detracting. The overall ride quality is pleasant and generally comfortable. The EV is slightly heavier than the gas-powered RAV4, which likely adds to its more stable feeling.

The only downside to this RAV4 EV is that the interior feels somewhat dated compared to the redesigned gas-powered RAV4 of the same model year. However, the tech in the cabin is user-friendly and set up nicely for easy access. Seat comfort is also more than adequate.

If you’re looking for a used Toyota RAV4 or a very well-rounded EV crossover, then the balanced 2014 RAV4 EV might be for you.
