We’re starting to see many of the brands on the market team up with a recent announcement that BMW and Jaguar will partner together.
The late Sergio Marchionne, the former FCA CEO, saw the future of product development in the automotive world which various brands would be developing similar technologies, dumping large sums of money into development, and creating cars that do the same thing. He cautioned against this and suggested partnerships that would allow brands to have the technology they desire and the platforms that can be shared by different names.
Creating an EV Platform
Because the battery packs used to power electric vehicles are made of lithium and several other rare earth elements, it’s important that battery packs become as universal as possible. Different battery packs are only going to cause more development challenges and use more materials than needed. Jaguar and BMW will partner together to create the next generation EV drive system that will be used to power the future vehicles we’ll see when it’s time for a great ride in an electric vehicle. These two brands realized it would be pointless to develop the technology individually with similar goals for each.
Shared Research and Shared Results
Both BMW and Jaguar have developed successful and impressive electric vehicle technology which will be brought together to create the new platform. The BMW i3 has been a model that has grown and improved over the years and Jaguar has the I-Pace SUV that has been able to prove its worth of the drive on the road and offers us a large amount of the versatility and performance we expect from a luxury SUV. The idea is to create an efficient and scalable platform that will work well for both brands.
Similar but Different
As these two brands come together to develop the platform that will underpin the new electric vehicle drive system, we can expect to see similarities but also strong differences. Because both brands are part of the luxury level, they will have similar needs for the powertrain to perform with refinement, performance, and range. While these aspects will be similar, you can expect the powertrains to be a bit different from each other with some of the brand personality from BMW and Jaguar in each one that has been completed to be put in the vehicle that comes from that respective brand.
Time for us to Imagine
With no timeline in place regarding how long it will take to develop the new electric drive system that will be offered by the Jaguar and BMW partnership, we are left to imagine what this powertrain could be. We also don’t know what vehicles will make use of this new powertrain. It could show up in a dynamic new version of the BMW M3 or it could be a Jaguar SUV that has the ability to use the powertrain to offer an amazing luxury ride. You can be certain that this partnership is going to produce something we can all admire when it arrives.
