When you buy a small car in the micro class where the Smart Fortwo is positioned you want to have more than just a shell on wheels. Many times we buy these micro cars to have the best fuel mileage, to get us to and from our workplace in the city, to have an easy vehicle that can practically be parked on the sidewalk and to have something better than a bicycle for getting to where we need to go. There’s much more to the Fortwo than what you might at first think and it certainly gives you a way to enjoy the ride when you’re shopping in this car class.
Last year the new Fortwo coupe was revamped with some impressive improvements to enjoy the ride. Now this small car is being improved again to give you the benefit of more choices on a new platform. This means you can choose the Smart Cabrio for a bit of top down enjoyment and a new Electric Drive coupe to have a small car that is powered by an EV powertrain. There is even a new EV Cabrio coming later this year as well to give you more of what you want.
The Smart fortwo is the ultimate city car with the smallest turning radius on the market and the ability to park where other cars can’t. You’ll love the maneuverability of this car and if you choose the Cabrio you’ll have a bit of a convertible experience that makes it even more fun. The customizations added to these new trim levels that were added this year allow this car to have the new Brabus Sport package for you to enjoy the ride and have exactly what you want in a tiny car that comes with a massive personality.
One of the most worrisome aspects of a car this small is how it would do in a crash. The fact there’s not much around the driver and single passenger has many people worried, but the fortwo uses what’s called a Tridion safety cell that can handle being in an accident and help keep you safe if this happens. No one wants to be in a collision but if one does happen you’ll have the safety you need and the ability to hopefully walk away from the crash with nothing more serious than some bumps and bruises that you’ll quickly heal from.
For the coupe models you have two power options to choose from. The EV Cabrio will be offered later, but for now the Cabrio is only offered in the gasoline engine version. The gasoline engine that’s offered for the Smart fortwo is a 0.9-liter turbocharged three-cylinder motor that gives you a small 89 horsepower and 100 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine is mated to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission to give you 31 city/38 hwy mpg in the manual or 33 city/38 hwy mpg for the automatic. This is small but peppy engine that performs the way you want it to.
For the EV models you’ll have the benefit of a three-phase synchronous electric motor that produces 80 horsepower and 118 lb.-ft. of torque. This car can give you a full day of driving in the city with the range of 68 miles from the small battery pack and motor that are driving the car. This small setup also has the benefit of reducing the charging time when you use a 240-volt charging port, making it to a full charge in only 2.5 hours meaning you could have a fully charged battery before you take your lunch break each day.
Is the Smart Fortwo the car for you? It certainly can be. Whether you choose the Coupe or Cabrio models you’ll have the benefit of a small car that can be parked anywhere and gives you the ride you’re looking for in the city. The cute shape and the upgraded equipment available for this car make it easy and fun to drive and if you choose the EV model you’ll never have the range you want and never have to stop at a gas station as long as this car is your daily driver.
