While the Paris Motor Show comes at a time in the year when many brand are launching their new models for the next model year and expecting older models to be gone from their lineup there was more than just cars that came to this show. This was a place for several new concepts to make their way across the stage including the concepts of an engine that could handle the work needed and be the next steps in making engines work more in accordance with the terrain and surroundings than just by using a set number of cylinders under the hood.
The most interesting new engine that showed itself at the Paris Motor Show was the Infiniti 2.0-liter VC-Turbo Engine. VC stances for variable compression and this engine was on display for the first time ever in Paris. This engine is expected to be one of the most advanced every created and shows up with an advanced multi-link system that can allows the engine to raise or lower the piston stroke based upon the driving conditions and inputs from the driver. This allows the engine to select the best compression ratio for the drive.
This engine that Infiniti brought to the show can change the compression ratio from 8:1 on up to 14:1 to give you the right compression for the drive. The lower compressions are meant for higher performance engines with the higher numbers used for more efficiency. As you can see from this range of compressions, the 2.0-liter engine from Infiniti is capable of both higher performance and more efficiency to be the right fit for your driving to give you want you want when out on the road. This means you can have the same engine give you the sports car drive you want to burn around a track and then have the daily driving manners you’re looking for in your commuter vehicle.
Not only do you have the benefit of more power and efficiency, this new combination allows the engine to give offer the feel of an advanced diesel powertrain while avoiding the challenge of the emissions a diesel engine puts into the atmosphere. This becomes the alternative you want to enjoy when it comes to a four-cylinder engine so that you don’t have to be concerned with what’s being dispelled, but you can enjoy the added feeling of an engine that performs at variable compression ratios.
This new engine is expected to go on sale in models starting in 2018 and has been in development for the past two decades. Infiniti has tested over 100 prototypes of this engine before they finally perfected this engine and have been able to drive over 1.9 million miles of road testing to learn that this is the right combination to give you variable compression ratios in a single engine. The goal for this engine is to eventually pull as much as 268 horsepower and 288 lb.-ft. of torque while offering much greater fuel efficiency when the V6 is developed with the variable compression ratio.
