At Pebble Beach Cadillac unveiled their new concept car called the Escala. This car is one that looks like it could be put into production right away, but it seems to be more likely to serve as the inspiration for several new luxury models from Cadillac that will top the CT6 in the lineup rather than take on the BMW 7 Series or the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in the marketplace. This could be a bit of a letdown for those who thought this car would be heading to production right away, but this car is one that may show up in a variety of ways.
Why would there be delays in the market for a flagship sedan to top the CT6? Simply put, Cadillac has already committed itself to the goal of developing the SUV market to be even more competitive than it already is. With the newest model the XT5 crossover SUV that recently took over for Cadillac there’s now room for a smaller and a larger model to flank this SUV in the crossover market. Unfortunately that might be the reason for the delay to market for any sedan that will be built to be better and larger than the CT6.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Escala that we might see is the engine that was shown at the show in Pebble Beach. This is a new 4.2-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine that will be the next generation of the high powered engines for the Cadillac lineup, giving us the most impressive engine on the market in a production luxury car, especially one that will be at that top of the range. It may not be the engine that we see in the next CT6 or a range topping flagship model.
What we can expect is a plug-in hybrid version of the CT6 will arrive soon and the all-electric model will show up on the lineup around 2020. As it appears, the Escala may have been nothing more than a teaser with the gorgeous and easy to enjoy interior that’s built to be an amazing place to drive with the multiple screen stack that flows seamlessly and responds to gestures and voice commands. Of course your favorite feature might have bene the look of the car with the sharp angle and narrow head and taillights, or you might love the tailored seat fabric that appears to be as soft as butter, but this is a car that is destined to be an inspiration piece, unfortunately.
Hopefully there will be enough of a call for this car to be made that Cadillac won’t have a choice but to make this car and have it be the range topping sedan in the lineup. Their decision to focus on the SUV market makes perfect sense, but seems a bit selfish after they show up at the Monterey Car Week with something as gorgeous and elegantly sophisticated as the Escala concept model.
