When you are out on the trails and a great distance from home one of the worst things that can happen to you is to have a structural failure that causes your vehicle to be inoperable. When the metal breaks apart you need to have a way to put it back together and a simple roll of duct tape will not do the job. Although there may be many tools in your toolbox you take with you on the trails that you don’t want to use certainly a portable welding kit is one you will never want to have to rely on, but having it on board can certainly make a huge difference.
If you are a serious off roader its likely you have spent thousands of dollars on equipment for your vehicle and it would be a shame to leave it stranded in the wilderness where a tow vehicle might be impossible to reach. With a portable welding kit you can fix a broken frame, driveshaft or any other necessary metal part that has snapped because you had the fun you wanted to have in the woods. The Trail Weld Kit uses two or three car batteries that are connected in series to let you make the repairs you need to make.
How much does the kit cost? The basic kit will cost you $225 and includes:
- Welding lead – 12 ft. of Temco 4g welding wire with Rod Clamp
- Ground lead – 12 ft. of Temco 4g welding wire with Ground Clamp
- 2 – 1 ft. battery leads to connect the batteries
- 7018 ¼ rod
- Rod Container
- Auto Dim compact welding goggles
- Carrying bag/Battery Cover
You can also purchase kits that include an ammo box or pelican carry case and you do need to have the right protective gear which includes gloves, wire brushes, a welding hammer and other necessary materials. Of course you don’t want to head out with the kit and no additional batteries, so make sure you have these as well before you take off to the wilderness.
Before you head out with your welding kit ready to make the repairs that might come up when on the trails you should learn how to weld so you can perform the tasks needed. The welds you create using this kit don’t have to be permanent welds, but they do have to be good enough to get you home so you can let your injured off roading machine rest until you can get the new parts needed.
As luck would have it, putting this item aboard your off roading vehicle may mean you never break another important piece that has to be welded together, but if you do, you will be glad you had this tool at your disposal. When you have your own welding kit you can help your friends who head out on the trails with you as well, which makes for a more enjoyable experience when everyone can get their off road brutes home after a day of fun.
