Because MINI is owned by BMW the logical choice to improving this sub-brand to become one that is known not only for quirky vehicles that fall somewhere between a tiny hatchback and a subcompact crossover SUV is to share some of the knowledge among the two brands. MINI is known for their small but stylish vehicles that gives us a great look and a British feel while being small enough to fit nearly everywhere on the road. The challenge for MINI has been in two markets where small hatchbacks and tiny SUVs don’t seem to sell as well as in the rest of the world.
For some reason, even though we have a large variety of hatchbacks driving on our roads, the US market is one of those that doesn’t typically sell well in this category. Another market that doesn’t particularly enjoy hatchbacks is the Chinese market. Because these are two of the largest markets in the world, especially in China, it’s important for automakers to create vehicles that can easily be admired and purchased in these areas. Because of this, MINI has announced the are working on a four-door sedan style that will certainly be more acceptable in these two markets.
With the goal of having at least five vehicles in the lineup a new body style is the way to go to change things up and offer a new look to the brand. This may mean we see names such as the Riley Elf or Wolseley Hornet that come back to the market for us to enjoy. What we expect to enjoy is a car that will ride on the same platform as the BMW X1 that is already shared with the MINI Clubman and it will of course have some of the same styling and the same wheelbase as the Clubman.
While this thought is still in the concept and idea phase we can really get excited by the idea of a German underpinned British car that comes in sedan form to be the perfect balance of everything we love in a foreign model along with the style and build we admire for our own driving. Once this car comes to the market for us to admire and enjoy it could easily be a car that shows us exactly what we have always wanted to have but somehow the trifecta of partnerships and style have never been matched up together.
How long will it be until we see the new Mini sedan? Right now it could be as much as five years down the road since we haven’t even been presented with a concept version yet, but with the platform already in place that timetable could easily be moved up to only a couple years from now rather than a full half-decade. Will you be one of the customers for the new Mini sedan when it comes out? That might depend upon the style and the build of the car, but you certainly could be ready to buy it as soon as it hits the market to enjoy a car that has all the class we want and the price and size that makes it a car that fits your lifestyle.
