I really don’t want to preach to you about how important it is to be patient when behind the wheel, especially since I know that I have my own version of “road rage” that I often succumb to when other drivers do things that seem to bother me, but there is something to be said for being patient when behind the wheel. Not only do you need to show some patience when you’re driving down the road, but if you live in an area that happens to be heavily populated it’s important to understand there is going to be traffic backups and stand stills at different times each day, which can really test your patience.
We have heard the term “defensive driving” which refers to anticipating other drivers doing the one thing that can cause an accident and being prepared to take appropriate action. This seems to be a lost thought process or skill in many instances. Is it because we have so much going on, are we so short on time that we don’t know how to slow down and make sure we arrive safely, is being on time that important in the grand scheme of things?
As someone who is overly obsessed with being on time or early for everything it takes all the control I have to realize the importance of taking my time driving when I know I am going to be late and if you ask my children they probably would tell you I need even more patience. The remark in my vehicle has been that I need my own lane to drive in on the road because I lack the tolerance for drivers who do things that irritate me more than I should. It’s likely I should dial this back since I am raising people who will soon be driving themselves.
In our current highly connected world we are all guilty of performing many tasks when driving that we shouldn’t. When was the last time you sent a text from behind the wheel? Have you ever eaten your lunch or even had a cup of coffee while driving? Of course you have, it’s part of our culture to perform additional tasks while driving, even though we shouldn’t. When you couple this with heavy traffic that can be caused by an accident, road construction or just a lot of people on the road at the same time you have a recipe for disaster.
Isn’t it time to use common sense and be mindful of the drivers on the road with us. As advice I need to take myself, let’s show some patience out there people. Typically being a person who weaves in and out of traffic with little regard for others will not get you where you need to go faster or sooner. If you are like me and have a strong desire to be on time everywhere you go, make sure you leave early enough to handle traffic when it can back up on you.
Enjoy this video showing a driver that certainly made a stupid move when faced with heavy traffic and please, be patient out there on the roads.
