Jeep is Doing the Production Shuffle

03.03.17 - Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

Jeep continues to be a brand that we trust and know as the most admirable off road brand in the industry but it’s about to undergo some major changes. This brand will have ten assembly plants in place in six countries once the new small one is built in India and starts to build vehicles in May of this year. Even though this new plant will give the brand ten in operation, the plants in North America are about to undergo some part of the largest restructuring that’s taken place for the brand since the Jeeps began being made for the public after World War II.

The news of the variety of models that will be added to the market have been covered in detail. We’ll see a new Wrangler and Compass in 2018, a Wrangler Unlimited based pickup in 2019 along with a new Grand Cherokee and a new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer in 2020. These models will be added to give us the lineup we want to enjoy on the market to complete the Jeep lineup and create the impressive list of models that will be offered to give us the right Jeep for all occasions.

In order to make this possible the three plants in North America that will be part of this production shakeup along with several of the models including the new Compass and Wrangler. In addition to these models being offered as new versions one of the plants, the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant will begin to produce the new Ram 1500 that will be shown at a show sometime in 2018. This will be the first step toward helping Jeep move toward hitting the sales goal of two million vehicles by 2018 which is an impressive jump from the sales results in 2016 of 1.4 million vehicles sold.

The transitions being made by Jeep are scheduled to happen in such a way that if one of them is delayed or not handled correctly Jeep won’t be able to reach this goal at all. This means the transition for this year is one of the most important in the history of the Jeep brand and will continue to help FCA gain profitability after still facing the negative impacts of bankruptcy that’s continued onward since Fiat chose to obtain Chrysler several years ago and bring the two brand houses together to be the names we know and love.

The movement that will occur includes the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois that will stop producing the Jeep Compass and Patriot in December and will take over the production of the Jeep Cherokee. The Cherokee will move from the Toledo plant which is to be retooled to produce the next generation of the Jeep Wrangler. The next generation of the Jeep Compass will also be built in Toluca, Mexico and these new models will be in the showrooms as early as the end of March to begin selling, giving us this new model in the numbers needed for Jeep to grow the sale desired.

Over the past five years Jeep has steadily increased its sales numbers and this looks to continue as long as the brand is able to meet all the goals set by the leadership of the Jeep brand. As these new models come out and Jeep and FCA comply with a new Presidential administration that may cause them to change some of their foreign plans, we’ll keep an eye out to see if Jeep does continue its impressive sales over the next couple years and find out if it’s able to reach the impressive growth desired by the end of 2018.
