The Ford Mustang Turns 50

Original 1965 Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang has been through many different body style changes over its lifetime, but one thing remains the same; it is a classic piece of American history. For 50 years, the Mustang has been the iconic image for American muscle at its finest, and with the unveiling of the brand new 2015 version, it doesn’t look like that is going to change anytime soon.

With what started as an attainable muscle car purchase for twenty-somethings in 1964, the Mustang has seen many incarnations over its 50 year run. During the expanse of these fifty years, Ford has continued to shake things up with every redesign they’ve put out. In its fifth generation, the Mustang saw a radical new body style with a nod to retro design in 2005.   The sixth generation, the first redesign in ten years, also celebrates the time-honored design, with a newfound modern flair thrown in for good measure.

In a look back, the 2015 Mustang has pulled in aspects of the fastback body style, with some European front end design, while still holding true to the illustrious image. With redesigned headlights and taillights, it may look a little softer than previous generations, but lacks none of the style that has made this car a classic. The Mustang seems to be handling turning 50 with grace and sophistication.

In a risky decision, Ford manufacturers have taken about an inch off of the height and added three onto the width, while still managing to allow for the roomiest interior in Mustang history. As an options, Ford offers another radical change allows drivers to fully adjust the handling, steering, and transmission to their specifications; a first for the Mustang.

With a newly independent rear suspension and redesigned front suspension, the two will now work in conjunction to provide a more accurate drive with better handling. The days of sacrificing precision for power are gone as Ford engineers have worked to provide both in the new model. Due to the increased handling, a drive on uneven roads will make the ride as smooth as driving on brand new asphalt.

While the pure power of the Mustang and the exterior styling has always been met with accolades, the interior has been somewhat lacking in comparison with other car models in the Ford lineup. This is not the case with the ’15 Mustang as the cabin boasts all the comforts and technology of other cars. Included in premium styles is the brand new version of the MyFord Touch Infotainment System, with Ford SYNC included in all models.

Standard features on the new model include push button start, USB ports, and an input jack for connecting devices without Bluetooth. Convenience features such as a locking glove box, capless gas tank, and lighted vanity mirrors are also a part of every 2015 model. If safety is a concern, the Mustang comes equipped with driver and passenger side front and side airbags, in addition to knee level airbags.

The new Mustang also comes with Ford’s MyKey technology that allows the driver to program their personal key with earlier fuel warnings, seat belt reminders, and an alarm that sounds as the driver approaches certain speeds. This feature is being lauded as an advanced safety system for parents that share the car with their teenagers, as it enables the owner to turn off incoming calls, disable certain features, and set warnings at certain speeds.

The coupe model has already made its way to the market in November of 2014, while the convertible is being made available just in time for an extra special holiday gift. Some customers are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Shelby GT350 model before they commit to a purchase of the brand new line of Mustangs. This version will feature all the power and glory of former Shelby models with a couple of tricks up its sleeve.

The 2015 version may not be the Mustang that fans are used to, but get ready for it. The three different engine sizes, newly designed suspension, and array of ten exterior paint colors signal the best Mustang yet! Fans of pure pony power should have no problem warming up to the new model in the first quarter of 2015, as all the models release.
