Which Can Tow More? Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee or Wrangler?

Which Can Tow More? Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee or Wrangler?

If you’re looking to buy a new Jeep, regardless of the model, chances are, you’re no stranger to a bit of adventure. After all, adventure is what the Jeep brand was built on.

And sometimes, that adventure requires a bit of cargo. Whether you’re loading up for a weekend at the lake, stocking gear for some climbing or hiking, or packing everything in for a few nights under the stars, a Jeep has you covered.

But one thing you might be wondering is what kind of towing capacity you’ll be getting with a Jeep. Maybe you’re regularly pulling those grown up toys down to the water for some action. Or perhaps your work means hitching up a heavy load is part of your every day.

So you’re wondering which Jeep model can pull the most. Or maybe you’re just wondering how much that Jeep you’re coveting can tug.

Either way, let’s talk about the tow ratings of the three most popular Jeep models; Wrangler, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee. Because pulling is important!

Cherokee

Let’s start with the Cherokee, which has long been Jeep’s flagship SUV. Super tough and ultra-reliable in style, performance, and usage, the Jeep Cherokee is one of the ultimate SUVs.

And, like most contemporary Jeeps, the Cherokee now comes with a seemingly endless selection of trim levels and package options.

One arena in which the Jeep Cherokee stands out is in its class-leading towing capacity which gives you, when properly equipped with the V6 engine and Trailer Tow package, a rating of up to 4,500 pounds.

But even with the smaller four-cylinder motor option, the Cherokee can still tug a fantastic 4,000 pounds.

Wrangler

Moving on to the ride that people think of when they think of “Jeep.”

Of course, that is the Jeep Wrangler.

Perhaps because it’s known as more of an off-road adventure machine, a boulder-climbing, mountain trail-crawling four-wheeler that people don’t often associate heavy duty tow capacity with the Wrangler.

But, maybe to your surprise, a Wrangler is a perfectly capable tower.

The Wrangler is offered in a ton of different packages (in fact, it’s hard to find two Wranglers that are exactly the same) and with a bunch of different power plant options and transmission combinations.

But when properly equipped, a new four-door Wrangler can tow up to 3,500 pounds (whereas most two-door models can tow around a sturdy 2,000).

Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has always had an eye toward luxury.

More refined than the Cherokee, the Grand Cherokee is drenched in comfort and flair. But it’s still a Jeep, which means it’s still plenty capable of work, action, and adventure.

And when it comes to towing capacity, the Grand Cherokee is no slouch at all, offering the most pulling power of any of these models.

Up to 7,200 pounds, to be more precise. So go ahead and hook up the boat, the trailer, even the compact fifth-wheel. The Grand Cherokee can handle it.
