Jeep has made a number of changes recently to some of its flagship models. The Jeep Grand Cherokee added the L version with a third-row, and now it’s getting a shorter version with two rows and a plug-in hybrid option.
This marks the second 4xe model by Jeep after the Wrangler. The Jeep Cherokee and all other Jeep SUVs are expected to have 4xe models by 2025.
Preview of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The 2022 Grand Cherokee looks very similar to the Grand Cherokee L, but the smaller 4xe version has a few notable differences. For example, the driver’s side front fender features a charging port. The C-pillar design is also different with a dramatic sweeping roof that riffs on the floating roof design trope. The grille and headlights on the new Grand Cherokee are the same as the Grand Cherokee L, but there are some minute differences on the 4xe model.
Expect the Wrangler 4xe’s gas-electric powertrain to be the same on the Grand Cherokee 4xe. This powertrain has proven to be quite stout with 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. It’s actually more powerful than the current Grand Cherokee’s 5.7-liter V8.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s Debut Has Been Delayed
The Grand Cherokee 4xe was supposed to debut at the New York International Auto Show, but the show was canceled due to Delta variant concerns. Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, has not revealed any new plans for the debut. However, previews of the Grand Cherokee 4xe are readily available. It appears to be sportier in appearance, with a sleek black bar defining the taillights and chrome surrounding the windows. A blue E badge adorns the charging port cover and you will find a 4xe logo on the left side of the tailgate.
Specifications and Features
The 4xe model of the Grand Cherokee will be outfitted in the highest luxury trim of the Grand Cherokee, which is the Summit Reserve. Also offered are two packages with extra tech, called the Tech Group and Advance ProTech. Another top highlight from the 4xe’s top trim is the usage of the Wagoneer’s 10.25-inch passenger screen.
As mentioned earlier, the Grand Cherokee 4xe should be outfitted with the Wrangler’s hybrid system. Jeep expects the new 4xe model to sell well based on how well the Wrangler 4xe has done. As of this year, the Wrangler 4xe is the top-selling PHEV in the United States. This sales success happened only two months after its official launch.
According to insiders at Mopar, the production of the new 4xe Grand Cherokee should start in late October of this year. It’s expected to go on sale in the last few weeks of 2021 or at the beginning of 2022.
