Ford Uses Virtual Reality for More Than Entertainment

There’s no reason for any car company on the planet in the modern age to use pens, paper, and pencils to design cars at all. It’s almost time that we stop using clay for molds and models as well and with the use of virtual reality and 3D imaging, car designers might feel more like Tony Stark when he was designing the final version of the Iron Man suit. As a company that’s ready to embrace this new technology, Ford uses virtual reality to push its designers to the future of automotive design.

The Right Pairing for Ford

The Ford Design studio has begun a partnership with the UK company called Gravity Sketch to help improve designs. This company has provided Ford with 3D virtual reality tools to give designers the chance to create their new models with the most advanced tools on the market. This new tool is similar to the VR glasses that we see used with a smartphone but these use an HTC Vive headset and controllers for the design process. Because this setup is programmed to create car designs and the parts that are going to be used in building the cars of the future, the process is streamlined for the design team.

A Better Design Environment

Vehicles are built in 3D, all the parts are created in 3D, and we drive in 3D, so why have we designed vehicles using paper and pencil for so long? The short answer is a lack of technology that was present in the past, but now we have the technology to make these designs in 3D. With this new technology, the designers at Ford will be able to create their cars and the parts needed in the environment that’s similar to the world in which the cars that are created will actually be driven.

Now that the designers will be able to view the parts and the items they’re working on from every angle, this team can create the new vehicle in a way that makes a lot of sense. This allows the design time to be cut down and makes it possible for the vehicles that come from Ford to be offered much sooner than they would be if older design methods were used to create vehicles from the brand. The success of this program is certainly going to change a lot when it comes to designing new vehicles.

Still Early, but Promising

This new design process is still in the early stages of development and hasn’t been used to design any of the Ford cars or parts that we see today. It’s also not the first time that Ford has pushed the envelope for more efficient processes.  Even so, if the project receives the approval of the Ford team, it will take a lot less time to bring a car from the idea phase to the production line and there should be fewer design changes that need to be made along the way. With this program, designing new Ford vehicles could be extremely cool and a lot of fun. See your Ford dealer for more information
