What Cars Receive the Most Tickets?

09.16.16 - Cop Writing Ticket

The old advice given that was passed down for many years was to avoid purchasing a red car or a sports car because they were the most ticketed and the most expensive to insure. While you would expect sports cars to have the most tickets issued, that old advice doesn’t really hold water when you look at the list of vehicles that are most and least ticketed on the roads today. Why are some cars ticketed more than others? It’s hard to understand the logic, but here are the cars that have receive the most and least number of tickets put into eight different categories for you to see which cars you might want to avoid.

Luxury Cars

In the Luxury car segment we see the cars that fall on both ends of the overall spectrum for most and least tickets by a percentage of owners and they are from the same brand. The Lexus ES 300 is the most ticketed car on the road with 33.4 percent of owners receiving tickets while the Lexus IS350 is the least ticketed car with only 3.4 percent of owners receiving tickets.

Compact Car

This pairing shouldn’t surprise you much and may change a bit as the least ticketed compact car, the Honda Civic at 11.9 percent of owners, adds the hatchback to the mix and has the new style that came in for 2016. The most ticketed car in this class is no surprise at all as it’s the Volkswagen Jetta GL which saw 31.4 percent of its owners being ticketed at some time during their ownership of the vehicle.

Midsize Car

In this class we have a bit of a change, but a car that offers the massive power of the Hellcat engine is certainly going to be a target and was the most ticketed as the Dodge Charger earned 32.1 percent of owners a ticket. On the other end of the spectrum the Volkswagen Passat receive the lowest percent in this class at 13.8 percent of owners having a ticket issued to them.

Minivan

In this class the difference between the most and the least isn’t quite as wide as in some of the other categories. The Chevrolet Venture was the least ticketed minivan with only 13.5 percent of owners being issued a ticket while the Ford Windstar was the most ticketed at 19.9 percent. Interestingly both of these vehicles are no longer built, but many are still on the road today.

Pickup Truck

The stylish and capable manners of the Toyota Tacoma have owners getting a little ahead of themselves on the road which called 30.1 percent of the Tacoma owners to receive a ticket and earn the top billing for the most tickets. On the other end of the list the Chevrolet C2500 is a truck built for work and not for play with most owners needing this big brute to haul stuff and only 13.9 percent of these owners were issued a ticket from the traffic authorities.

Sport/Compact Car

The reason for this classification is the fact that the hot hatches of the market are added to this group which shows a surprising ticket spread. The Volkswagen GTI became the most ticketed car at 30.3 percent of owners receiving tickets while the Alfa Romeo 4C is the least ticketed at only 12.5 percent of the owners. It seems those driving the Alfa Romeo models are saving their horses for when they make it to the track.

Subcompact Car

The least ticketed car is the Mitsubishi Mirage at 12.5 percent of owners receiving tickets and a surprise that this car is capable of being ticketed at all. The car that receives the highest percentage of the tickets in this class is the Mini Cooper S which saw 26.7 percent of its owners receiving a ticket at some point during ownership.

SUV

This is a huge class of vehicle and in the future may need to be put into subclasses like the cars, but for now the Mazda Tribute receives the highest percentage of tickets at 29.9 percent. On the other end of the spectrum we see the Buick Encore that only picks up 3.2 percent of tickets for its owners making it one of the least ticketed vehicles on the market today.
