Top Models Being Tested Together

02.21.17 - Corvette Logo

There are about to be two very different but also very similar top models in the Chevrolet lineup. These both will carry the name we’ve come to love of Corvette, but both are different in many ways while enjoying the benefits of the performance that we want our cars to have, especially those that are made to be the leaders on the track. When Ford surprised us with the new GT it was time for Chevrolet to take action and begin work on what will be the next car from their stable to take on not on the GT but many other models as well.

The two cars that are so different but similar are the new Corvette ZR1 and the new mid-engine Corvette which hasn’t been given an official name but will likely be called the Corvette Zora. The ZR1 is set to be the top model in the front engine range and when you see these two side by side you can see a huge difference between them. The ZR1 is expected to make use of the Z06 650 horsepower supercharged LT4 V8 engine while the new mid-engine model may have the 6.2-liter direct injected LT5 V8 which was actually information leaked early by GM.

So far we haven’t seen either of these cars completely, and have only seen them through spy shots on the test tracks they work on, but there are impressive differences to be shown other than just the engines. The ZR1 looks like a Corvette with the larger hood and longer front end while having a shorter rear end to let us know the engine is up front and the back is merely a small place to store some gear of needed. This is the look we’ve come to expect and have gotten used to from any Corvette.

The new mid-engine model is built completely different. The hood is shorter and lower with a sharper angle toward the ground to cut the wind better. The rear is longer and larger to house the massive engine that’s powering the vehicle. Unfortunately, there isn’t much else to tell because Chevrolet has worked hard to keep most of what these two cars are under wraps until such time as they are ready to reveal them to the world. If it weren’t for the spy photos, we wouldn’t have any idea what the mid-engine model looked like at all.

Of course, the main target of the new mid-engine Corvette will be the Ford GT, but this is a car that has plans to take on any of the rivals from other brands such as Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini. Chevrolet is tired of the Corvette being near the bottom of the pack when it comes to the supercars that customers can drive and have a mid-engine model could change all that. The ZR1 will be the new top front-engine version and the new mid-engine Corvette will eventually be the top performer overall with the added power and the new position of the engine. I can’t wait to see these two when they finally do hit the market.
