You almost can’t read any publication about vehicles and their technology advancements without reading about the move toward EV models or the improvements being made in hybrid powertrains. While there is still a lot to learn and EVs haven’t found a way to offer us the same time to refuel or range as our gasoline vehicles, this technology is taking hold and nearly every brand in the automotive industry is participating in some way shape or form. This even includes a staunch builder of supercars that typically doesn’t even use turbocharging such as Lamborghini.

In recent news, Lamborghini has announced they plan to build a supercar of the future by making it an electric vehicle. The plan is to raid the parts bin at Porsche to find the items needed to make the car and have a great new supercar added to the market. It seems that, while we have only recently heard this news, there is already a name for the project and a date in mind as to when this vehicle will make it to market for us to admire and enjoy. The name is Vitola and the goal is to have the supercar on the market by the 2020 model year.

What made Lamborghini decide this was the direction to go? Possibly because the new Model S P100D from Tesla is now the quickest production car in the world with its amazing time to reach sixty mph. It could also be because Porsche has what they need as a base and they can improve upon it. While Lamborghini and Porsche aren’t exactly married to each other, they are both part of the Volkswagen Group and in recent years the entire group has worked to share technology and advance the future of the organization much farther than it already is.

The bin Lamborghini would chose to raid is the Mission E electric bin. Currently the Mission E is an electric sports car from Porsche that has a motor on both axles and can produce nearly 600 horsepower which is enough to be able to accelerate to sixty mph in less than 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. This is certainly an impressive car and outstanding numbers, but Lamborghini wants to take this as the base numbers and help make them even more impressive in their new Vitola model over the next few years.

The goal speed and power for Lamborghini is to reach enough power to reach sixty mph in 2.5 seconds or less and reach a top speed of 186 mph. Of course the weight of the car and how it’s built will have a lot to do with the end result, but with the Mission E as their starting point, Lamborghini certainly has a lead toward making this happen. The only real challenge will be making sure they stay ahead of whatever else comes to the market during that time which could keep them from being able to achieve the goal of being the quickest production car in the world.
