2015 Land Rover LR4: An Angry Off Roader Full of Luxury

2015 Land Rover LR4

Heading off the paved paths can be an adventure in many vehicles. Finding yourself enjoying the many wonderments of nature such as quiet valleys, rolling hills, majestic mountains and a plethora of views that simply cannot be had from a paved road can recharge your senses and make you really appreciate everything around you. In order to enjoy these great views and experience nature the right vehicle for the job is needed to get you there and Land Rover offers a range of SUVs that make these adventures much easier than any other brand.

The Land Rover LR4 is a large and boxy SUV that appears to almost be a throwback to the Land Rover models of old. The LR4 is full of high end luxury features to offer a high style of driving and riding along to give the inside a feel and equipment for the ride out to nature. The LR4 competes in a class with the Mercedes-Benz GL450 and Infiniti QX60, leaving them both behind when it comes to off road capabilities. For 2015 the LR4 adds only a few small touches over the previous model including InControl Apps, smart phone integration, a dual-tone Windsor Leather seating option, side step rails, adaptive cruise control, and collision mitigation.

As a rugged, go-anywhere vehicle, the LR4 SUV shows up with a body on frame design that does give a comfortable ride and handling. Unusual with a vehicle of this design, Land Rover shows the world why it’s the leader in off road vehicles with the dynamic four-corner air suspension and steering weighting that allow the vehicle to maneuver and ride smoothly on the pavement as well as be highly capable off the road. At this size, the LR4 is not an SUV that is going to scoot around corners like a sports car, but it does offer enjoyment for every day driving that many SUVs in this class do not, especially those fitted with advanced all-wheel drive systems. As the height of class, the LR4 also gives owners a quiet cabin, to be the beginning of the oasis when heading off road, and a great place to get away from the rest when commuting on a daily basis.

The LR4 comes into the market powered by only one engine, but it is the perfect engine for such an amazing off road beast. This engine shows up as a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that offers up a strong 340 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is attached to a high performance eight-speed automatic transmission to give the engine everything it can. The powertrain does feature the start/stop technology to help save some fuel and the towing capacity of the LR4 is a very strong 7,716 pounds. The fuel mileage for this vehicle comes in at a very meager 15 city/19 hwy mpg, but fuel efficiency is not the reason to buy a Land Rover model anyway.

The LR4 boasts one of the most updated and modern cabins available to give owners a great menu of equipment to utilize and enjoy. The entire cabin is covered in beautiful materials to create the luxury feeling before the engine is even turned on. The control panel offers a completely modernized design and features the most advanced technology available to for all occupants to enjoy and appreciate. Seating is easy to benefit from in the LR4, giving generous leg room and head room in all seats. The LR4 can be had with an optional third row of seats which does diminish the cargo capacity and is only really suitable for children, but when needed, this option can be used. Without the third row the LR4 offers forty cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row of seats, more than enough for some gear to go on the trip.

The outside of the LR4 is a stout, boxy shaped, angry beast that means business while allowing the owners to enjoy the play time they are looking for. With vertical sides and rear, and nearly horizontal shape to the hood and roof, the LR4 does not offer any aerodynamics, but does allow for the maximum space to be utilized for the footprint of this great brawler. The wave design grill and old-style headlights adorn the front fascia of the LR4 giving it the mean look that is actually very attractive on this big beast.

The standard features for the LR4 show up in the three trim levels, Base, HSE and HSE LUX. The Base model includes seating for five, the air suspension, start/stop technology, a single speed transfer gear, a Meridian sound system and front and rear parking sensors. The HSE and HSE LUX move up to seven passenger seating as standard fare and the HSE has front park distance control, xenon headlights and a navigation system. The top end, HSE LUX adds a surround sound to the Meridian system, the Windsor Leather package and some unique wheels.

The optional features for the LR4 start with a five-camera system to give a full surround view of the vehicle, a rear seat DVD entertainment system, adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking and the Heavy Duty Package which adds a locking rear differential, low range on the transfer case and a full-size spare tire. The seven passenger seating is also optional on the base model for those who need it, but does reduce the cargo space as mentioned above.

For the Land Rover LR4 the price to purchase the base model comes in just above the $51,000 mark with the mid-range HSE coming in around $56,250 to start and the top end HSE LUX carrying in a price that reaches up above the $61,500 mark. Loading this mammoth up with all the features possible on the HSE LUX will carry a price of well over $80,000. For an SUV that can carry you out to the remote reaches of nature and allow you to marvel at all that is offered, this is a reasonably priced vehicle at the very top end of the SUV spectrum.
